49) Minecraft: Switch Edition

This post may contain Amazon affiliate links we earn from. Please assume all links are affiliate.

You might just be living under a rock if you have never heard of Minecraft. A bedrock that is!

Silliness aside, Minecraft is a game about exploration and creation set in a world that revolves around crafting and construction.

The world is in 3D but has a primitive, pixel visual style.

Everything is made up of squares and the goal is to survive, play, make, and adventure through randomly generated worlds.

Additional modes are included that allow players to create a world of their dreams, to invite players online to play, and to battle ruthless enemies with crafted weapons.

Minecraft truly is the game that you make it to be.

48) Transistor

transistor banner
Image: Nintendo.com

I loved the fantasy themed game Bastion, and Transistor is yet another awesome gem from the same developers.

Transistor is a sci-fi themed game about using an unknown weapon called the “Transistor” against enemies while traveling through a futuristic city.

Gameplay is fast-paced and quick action is needed to dispatch foes.

Role playing elements are included such as the ability to customize the unknown weapon in thousands of ways.

A gorgeous hand-painted art style and moving soundtrack rounds out this stellar title, making this game just as good as its predecessor.

47) Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom

monster-boy-and-the-cursed-kingdom banner
Image: Nintendo.com

You came to the right game if you want to feel like you’re living out a Saturday morning cartoon.

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom have a high-quality, hand drawn art style that is vibrant and based on a fantasy setting.

I’ve never seen anything like it!

Players take control of a young boy who has to save his kingdom from monsters.

New items and abilities will be acquired, and secrets will be found, along with new character forms to transform into that help players navigate the 2D, interconnected world.

This classic series is reborn with care and modernized with HD visuals, an amazing soundtrack, and more.

46) Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

donkey-kong-country-tropical-freeze banner
Image: Nintendo.com

This Nintendo Wii U port was hailed as one of the best platform adventure games ever made when it originally released.

A sentiment that still remains now that Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze is on the Nintendo Switch.

This is one hectic and difficult game that can be played with up to two players.

Become one of Donkey Kong’s family members and traverse dozens of progressively challenging stages.

Find and collect collectibles, fight baddies, and battle bosses on the way to saving the lands from no-good tyrants.

Do not let this game’s beautiful cartoon visuals, high quality soundtrack, and classic 2D platform gameplay fool you.

As I mentioned before, this is one hard game.

Luckily, the Switch version allows players to play as Funky Long which essentially makes the game much easier to play and enjoy for those looking for a chill experience (pun intended).

45) The Messenger

the-messenger banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Being a ninja is so much fun. And The Messenger knows that and allows the player to traverse stages in order to save a ninja’s clan from evil.

This game is an homage to (and amalgamation of) the side-scrolling, 2D Ninja Gaiden and Metroid series from the Nintendo Entertainment System.

The visual style might have been ripped out of the 1980s but it comes equipped with modern HD flair and widescreen support.

The game starts off as a traditional adventure game, moving from screen-to-screen left to right, until something happens in the story and then the game shifts directions.

I won’t spoil it here, but it’s super cool to see how this game transforms and opens up narrative wise.

44) Rocket League

rocket-league banner
Image: Nintendo.com

This is what happens when you combine soccer and vehicles together in one game.

Rocket League is a competitive arcade, sports game about playing a game of soccer but with cars.

Players control awesome vehicles to race around large fields with the goal of knocking a giant ball into their opponent’s goal.

This mega popular title can also be played online against friends and other players while deep car customization allows each person to stand out from the rest.

As of now, there are over 500 trillion cosmetic combinations to choose from. That’s just bonkers!

Additional modes and added content will keep interested players gaming for years to come.

And best of all? This game has been updated in 2020 to become entirely free to play.

43) Iconoclasts

iconoclasts banner
Image: Nintendo.com

A solid 2D adventure game with platforming elements, Iconoclasts tells the story of a mechanic on a planet that has seen better days.

Gameplay centers around adventuring through environments while solving puzzles and battling enemies and huge bosses.

This independent game also includes multiple difficulty settings so each player can choose the best difficulty for that player in a world that promises hours of gameplay.

Fans of Rayman, Mario, and Sonic games of yesteryear will find something to enjoy in this modern gem.

42) Velocity 2X

velocity2x banner
Image: Nintendo.com

I’ve dreamed about a single game that combined two gameplay genres into one, and Velocity 2X is that game.

Play as Kai who has been enhanced by aliens, in this sci-fi game about piloting a ship and blasting enemies in the air.

After docking, control Kai as she speed-runs through stages, blasting everything in her path.

This is a high-speed, fast-paced action game while piloting and on foot so expect quick reflexes to be both satisfying and the keys to victory.

41) Owlboy

owlboy banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Owlboy is a colorful hand-drawn adventure game about being a mute owl boy in a world where sky pirates invade his world.

Gameplay, of course, is driven by story but relies on moving from platform to platform, area to area while also being able to fly and pick up things along the way.

This title is very much a modern, HD experience of the type of exploration games that were popular on the systems of the 1990s.

Fans of adventure or platform games, large areas to explore, and boss fights will find something to enjoy here.

40) Katamari Damacy REROLL

katamari-damacy-reroll banner
Image: Nintendo.com

You’ll fall in love with this game immediately as long as you love quirky, Japanese-made games.

Katamari Damacy is the tale of a prince after his father accidentally destroys the stars.

As the prince, it is the player’s duty to make his father proud once more.

Gameplay centers around pushing a ball through different locales, making the ball grow as one rolls over items that get stuck to the ball.

Items can only be collected if your ball is as big or bigger than the object being touched, which is the strategic and puzzle element to this game.

Really, Katamari Damacy is a light-hearted experience that is all about having fun and enjoying the over-the-top story.

39) Axiom Verge

axiom-verge banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Axiom Verge has been at the top of many people’s “best games” list since it released and for good reason.

It’s a competent and fun action exploration game about adventuring through an interconnected labyrinth.

This is a sci-fi tale about a science experiment gone wrong and then waking up on a foreign planet full of hostile creatures to fight and secrets to find.

Of course, players will find weapons and items along the way while traversing nightmarish environments.

Can’t go wrong with retro-fueled action.

The game pays homage to classic titles from the 1980s, specifically Nintendo’s Metroid title, with its pixel visuals and 8-bit soundtrack to its overall feel.

Axiom Verge is very much a lover letter to past games and a very good love letter at that.

38) The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

the-legend-of-zelda-links-awakening banner
Image: Nintendo.com

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is a remake of a classic black-and-white GameBoy game made by Nintendo in the early 1990s.

Link sets sail on the open seas when a storm destroys his ship.

He then washes up on an island full of strange inhabitants, creatures, and lore.

This remake’s superb visuals breathes new life in the classic Zelda entry.

The world looks like a colorful claymation diorama in motion and has all of the iconic Zelda items, puzzles, and charm the series is known for.

This is a great pickup for fans of the original as well as newbies.

37) Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition

kentucky-route-zero-tv-edition banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Prepare for a dialogue-driven, text adventure game like no other.

Kentucky Route Zero is very much a cinematic visual novel-esque game that relies on story, narrative, and a unique graphical style to keep intrigue.

This collection for the Nintendo Switch contains the entire 5-part story and interludes that were released to tell the complete tale in a single package.

Specifically, the game revolves around a handful of characters and interactions while giving the player free reign as to how each conversation plays out.

A must-play for those looking for an artistic and deep interactive experience that does not rely on quick reflexes or professional skills but more on intellect and decision making.

36) Enter the Gungeon

enter-the-gungeon banner
Image: Nintendo.com

What happens when you have a crazy idea and go with it to the max? You come up with Enter the Gungeon.

This is a pixel-art game about roaming dangerous dungeons full of traps and enemies alone or with friends in cooperative play in order to find a gun that can destroy the past.

Yup.

It’s not only ridiculous but fun and challenging as gameplay requires quick reflexes to dodge the dozens of projectiles enemies shoot at the player.

Fun in this wacky title is found from enjoying intense gameplay sessions, so bring your A-game and enter the Gungeon.

35) Guacamelee! 2

guacamelee-2 banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Fans of Mexican culture, lore, and action-exploration games will love what they find here.

Guacamelee! 2 is the continued saga of a retired luchador who must fight hordes of the undead wreaking havoc.

Players control Juan and his arsenal of wrestling moves to dispatch foes while traversing an interconnected labyrinth world full of new areas to explore, new upgrades, and skills to acquire.

The game’s visuals and soundtrack are steeped in the culture that it is based on which really makes the game come alive.

34) Dragon Ball FighterZ

dragon-ball-fighterz banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Want a faithful video game adaptation of the popular action anime saga? Look no further.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is a 2D fighting game similar to the iconic Street Fighter series but with characters ripped straight from the anime.

Speaking of anime, this game’s state-of-the-art visual style makes the game look nearly indistinguishable from the series it’s based on.

It looks, feels, and acts as if one is actually playing the Dragon Ball Z show as combat is fast-paced, full of signature moves fans would know and love, and tons of flare.

33) Astral Chain

astral-chain banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Astral Chain is yet another fast action game from Platinum Games, the makers of Bayonetta.

But if the mature rated witch of Bayonetta is not your style, perhaps you’ll find Astral Chain’s sci-fi setting more to your liking.

Play as twin brother and sister police officers in order to stop an alien race from destroying the planet by utilizing creatures of your own that fight alongside you.

The game is accompanied by high production values and has voice acting to explain the story.

It also includes a unique, anime-inspired visual direction that is heavily steeped in science fiction and neon lights.

32) Cuphead

cuphead banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Cuphead is one of the most original games I’ve ever seen.

It’s a hard and challenging arcade shooter meant for seasoned players but has the unique visual style and audio style of 1930s Disney cartoons and cartoons of that era.

The visual and audio style, the challenging levels, and shooting gameplay are what make this game come to life.

Gameplay is centered around going through levels and destroying enemies while gaining power-ups.

Cuphead’s release on the Nintendo Switch is also quite significant because it’s one of the first Xbox exclusive releases to make its way on Nintendo’s popular hybrid console.

And it’s a darned good one.

31) Stardew Valley

stardew-valley banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Stardew Valley is one of my most played games on the Nintendo Switch. I’ve clocked in over 100 hours and counting.

This game is a daily social farming simulator with a story that is as long as you want it to be.

Players are free to design their farms however they like, go fishing, grow produce, and create relationships with townsfolk.

These tasks are addicting and make time go by in the blink of an eye. The best part?

Nothing is set in stone and players get to enjoy life in Stardew Valley however they want.

A multiplayer mode makes play sessions even more fun with friends.

30) Cave Story +

cave-story banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Cave Story is an odd little gem of a game.

It’s a story driven adventure game set within an interconnected world sewed together by interactions with odd characters, boss battles, and weapon upgrades.

The player takes control of a robot boy with amnesia thrust into an unknown world inhabited by creatures.

Thrust into these odd denizen’s lives, the boy must go on an adventure underground to find answers.

I’ve heard about this acclaimed game for a long time but finally beat it on the Nintendo Switch.

I enjoyed its music, retro pixel art direction, and quirky characters that lasted with me long after I finished playing.

29) Ikaruga

ikaruga banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Ikaruga is a classic tough-as-nails arcade shooter re-released for the Nintendo Switch.

Players take control of flying fighter machines capable of switching between polarities.

The goal is to switch between black and white polarities, destroying enemies of the opposite polarity while soaring towards powerful bosses that wait at the end of each stage.

Stages in Ikaruga are designed perfectly, require precise hand-eye coordination at times, and are often brutal.

I’m still trying to beat this classic after originally having played it on the Nintendo GameCube in the early 2000s.

The joy of playing Ikaruga is getting better until you’re able to pass each stage, one by one.

Good luck. You’ll need it.

28) SteamWorld Dig 2

steamworld-dig-2 banner
Image: Nintendo.com

SteamWorld Dig 2 is just what the world needs.

I’m a huge fan of the first game, and the sequel does what the first game does but better.

Players play as a robot who mines in an interconnected world with a slight narrative story to move the game along.

New items, better level design, and much more have been added to the series.

The gameplay centers around digging deep into underground caverns, gaining items, and upgrading abilities after each play session.

The more one upgrades the more one can dig, burrowing deeper and unlocking the secrets of the world.

27) Diablo III: Eternal Collection

diablo-iii-eternal-collection banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Enter the underworld and prepare to be there for a long time.

Diablo 3 is an addictive hack-and-slash, dungeon crawling game about selecting a character type that suits your preferred play style and entering numerous dungeons to fight monsters and obtain loot.

The core gameplay is fun, immediate, and compelling and can last for hundreds of hours.

A handful of character types, dozens of unique skills for each, a ridiculous amount of difficulty modes to complete, a grand story mode to play, and an endless adventure mode keeps Diablo 3 fresh for a long time.

The Nintendo Switch version includes exclusive content from the Legend of Zelda series, all Diablo 3 expansion packs released over the years, and the super addicting online-based season mode.

26) Downwell

downwell banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Downwell is a straightforward arcade game.

Players are tasked with collecting red gems while descending down a well filled with items, treasures, and monsters.

Hence the title, Downwell.

Don’t be fooled, however, by the game’s minimalist, retro-inspired design of pixel art with just a few colors.

Challenges await down the well and each trip is guaranteed to be different due to the level being randomly generated each time one plays.

25) Super Mario Maker 2

super-mario-maker-2 banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Super Mario Maker 2 takes fan level creation to the next level (pun intended) in this sequel to one of Nintendo Wii U’s most successful and popular games,.

Super Mario Maker 2 is a Mario course creation tool in which players can design the Super Mario courses of their dreams.

Then, players can share their levels with the world for others to play and enjoy.

Classic Mario enemies, items, themes, power ups, and more can be placed almost anywhere in creation mode, allowing total control over one’s creation.

Exclusive and new features in Super Mario Maker 2 include additional item variety, a new single-player story mode, and so much more.

24) What Remains of Edith Finch

what-remains-of-edith-finch banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Have you ever asked yourself what remains of Edith Finch? You have now!

This is a visually stunning first person adventure game about a family.

Take control of Edith who travels to her family’s home, the Finch home, to search for clues as to how the rest of her family died and why she’s the only survivor.

The game is split up into multiple stories with mystery and intrigue waiting at the end of each tale.

A remarkable and diverse game that deserves its accolades.

23) Hyper Light Drifter (Special Edition)

hyper-light-drifter-special-edition banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Hyper Light Drifter has everything a great game could want.

The visuals are a vibrant, yet dark, take on retro pixel art of the 1990s but modernized for a widescreen, high definition world.

The goal of this action adventure game is to find a cure for an illness by traversing a world of ruin littered with enemies.

Gameplay plays out in real time as the player is tasked with battling foes with quick reflexes and the use of sword swipes and different abilities like freeze attacks and more.

To top things off, this is the Special Edition that includes exclusive content for the Nintendo Switch.

22) Okami HD

okami-hd banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Okami is Capcom’s answer to The Legend of Zelda series, and it’s a mighty good one at that. And there’s even more to love in this high definition re-release.

The game’s ink inspired watercolor visual art style is striking and the game’s lore is deep, and intriguing.

Take control of a legendary fox sun goddess and do battle across the lands, solving puzzles, collecting items, and journeying through a Japanese inspired world full of fun and challenges.

The Switch version also includes touch screen controls for the game’s paint brush technique which many fans asked for.

21) Fire Emblem: Three Houses

fire-emblem-three-houses banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Fire Emblem has been Nintendo’s worldwide break-out success.

A popular franchise in Japan since the 1980s, this series only gained immense popularity since the Nintendo 3DS iterations and Three Houses on Switch continues the momentum with another stellar game.

This is a tale of three separate camps at an academy in which the player has to teach students to conquer their studies and battles.

Gameplay is centered around dialogue and epic turn-based strategy battles with role playing features, while the game is aesthetically anime inspired.

Those looking for a long, compelling story should look no further.

20) Into the Breach

IntoTheBreach banner
Image: Nintendo.com

I once went into the breach before, and I am happy I did. Because Into the Breach is one crazy game.

It’s all about controlling machines from the future to wage war against large creatures in a turn-based strategy setting.

Yeah. True story. This game is bonkers but is crafted with care and is a bunch of fun, to boot.

The gameplay centers around moving mechs across a grid playing field to fight enemy troops.

Luckily, the game provides weapon upgrades to boost the strength of robot soldiers.

Saving human civilization from the brink of disaster has never been more engaging or thrilling to play.

19) Dead Cells

Dead Cells screenshot of the main character in a dank sewers jumping over an archer's arrow
Dead Cells for Nintendo Switch

Dead Cells is lauded by fans and the gaming industry at large for its fast-paced action but fair gameplay.

This game is a challenging adventure across an interconnected world where dying, trial and error, and skill are required to play.

I, personally, became drawn to the game’s colorful yet dark visuals along with the no-checkpoint gameplay that makes every playthrough meaningful and exciting.

And how could one not love gaining new abilities, weapons, and new skills along the way?

Games like this (play, die, restart) are from the “love-it-or-hate-it” variety.

Regardless, this game does what it does very, very well.

18) Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition

ori-and-the-blind-forest-definitive-edition banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Ori and the Blind Forest is an Xbox exclusive game released on a Nintendo platform during a time where fans still praised their console of choice while publishers blurred the lines of where their games release.

What was once a critically acclaimed Xbox game became a critically acclaimed Nintendo Switch game, too.

My jaw dropped simply seeing footage of Ori in action. It looked like a hand painted storybook tale in motion.

The game contains a fully orchestrated soundtrack, 2D platforming gameplay, and an emotionally driven story about confronting a great evil.

Ori made sure to check all the boxes concerning what makes a game a “must-have”, no matter the console it released on.

17) Bayonetta + Bayonetta 2 Double Pack

bayonetta-2 banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Two stellar games, twice the witching action.

Bayonetta is a naughty and sassy witch with an attitude bent on destroying angels and demons and anything that gets in her way.

A theme that remains the same in both titles.

I still remember playing the first game’s demo years ago, only to finally play it to completion on my Nintendo Switch.

And I had a blast.

This series is a mature themed action game about exploring environments overrun by denizens of heaven and the underworld as a nimble witch with abilities.

One must use guns and Bayonetta’s demonic strengths to defeat numerous threats that include larger than life bosses. Upgrades are plentiful, but so are the curse words, blood, and gore.

Be warned: this witch is naughty, like I said.

This series is one of my favorite action series from the previous decade and is worthy of any Switch owner’s library.

The Nintendo Switch Bayonetta Double Pack contains two must play, critically acclaimed titles.

You can’t ask much more than that.

16) Hollow Knight

hollow-knight banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Everyone seems to love Hollow Knight and for good reason.

This is a modern take on a classic side scrolling, action formula made popular in the 1980s and 1990s.

Become the main character and travel through interconnected worlds fighting bosses, obtaining upgrades, gaining new abilities, choosing one’s own path, and fighting over a hundred unique enemies along the way.

This is a critically acclaimed game, praised for its presentation and satisfying gameplay, that doesn’t disappoint.

15) Bastion

bastion banner
Image: Nintendo.com

I fell in love with Bastion when it first released years ago, and I’m glad to have it once again on the Nintendo Switch.

This is a beautiful three-quarters camera viewed adventure game that almost looks like a watercolor painting.

Take control of a silent young boy that wields a diverse selection of powerful weapons and traverse a fantasy world filled with monsters while a narrator voices the action.

Yup. A narrative voices your nearly every move with thematic flair.

This is the first game I’ve ever experienced that includes a narrator detailing the story as I played which made for a truly unique adventure that everyone should try.

14) Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove

shovel-knight-treasure-trove banner
Image: Nintendo.com

The Shovel Knight series contains multiple interconnected games based on a knight and his trusty shovel.

Treasure Trove is the compilation of all of these great games in one place.

And these great games are love letters to classic Nintendo Entertainment System games of the 1980s.

Shovel Knight is an action platformer about traversing through stages, defeating enemies, and taking on tough bosses with pixel aesthetics and nostalgic sounds heavily inspired by 30 year old cartridge games.

This is a modern, high definition take on retro classics of yesteryear done right.

13) SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition

steamworld-heist-ultimate-edition banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Steamworld Dig is one of my favorite Wii U games. And SteamWorld Heist is the next game in the series.

But to my surprise, Heist is an entirely different genre of game. And it is just as fun as the first game in the series.

This critically acclaimed strategy game has a turn based combat that revolves around action and adventure.

You’ll play as robots in space, boarding and looting other ships for dozens of hours.

This Ultimate Edition also includes extra add-on content to round out an already amazing package.

12) Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition

Dragon Quest 11 S banner
Dragon Quest 11 S

Dragon Quest 11 S: A long name for a long game, and not a dull moment you’ll find.

This fantasy role playing game is a grand adventure made by role playing game legends Square Enix.

The anime visual styles, top notch voice acting, sprawling environments, and three-dimensional cast of playable characters makes this one of my favorite games of all times.

The difficulty and gameplay is suited for both role playing games beginners and seasoned pros looking for a challenge.

And the story is riveting, filled with twists and turns for dozens (if not hundreds) of hours.

11) Sonic Mania Plus

sonic-mania plus banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Talk to most die-hard Sonic the Hedgehog fans and most will say the same thing: Sonic never felt right after he went 3D.

That is why the Sonic Mania is critically acclaimed and well received by fans as it reproduced the speedy gameplay and 2D pixel visuals from the popular and classic 1990s Sonic games.

Slap modern high definition visuals, modes, and multiplayer features to make a grade-A experience for all ages.

The Plus version of this game adds additional characters and expands how many players can compete in the competitive mode.

10) Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing New Horizons banner
Animal Crossing New Horizons

The Nintendo Switch is a beast of a machine, as it constantly produces the best iterations of any given franchise.

Case in point: Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the best Animal Crossing game ever made. Period.

Jump onto a deserted island and develop it from scratch as you meet new and returning series staples, create items with the new crafting system, visit other islands for resources, play online with friends and family, customize your village like never before, participate in seasonal events, and complete daily and long term quests for infinite relay value.

New Horizons is the perfect vacation, quarantine, and after-work game that never ends.

Say goodbye to your life, and join the island with the million of us who already have.

9) INSIDE

inside banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Inside was one of my most anticipated games of 2018 and the game did not disappoint.

Why?

Because the same developers who made this game made one of my favorite games of all time, Limbo.

Inside keeps Limbo’s stellar and striking gray-scale, black and white visual style along with Limbo’s immersive minimal on-screen interface (there is none; no life bars or scores, only the game world) and progressively tougher puzzles.

I won’t spoil anything about what you’ll find along this journey, except that it is a journey you’ll want to experience in your lifetime.

8) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe banner
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is (hands down) my favorite Mario Kart game ever.

And, I argue, it’s the best Mario Kart game ever made.

It includes dozens of playable characters including those from other Nintendo franchises such as Link from the Legend of Zelda and Isabelle from Animal Crossing.

Additionally, there are nearly 50 courses to play on and hundreds of kart and motorcycle combinations to choose from.

On top of all of this, the game adds additional features to help new players enjoy the game alongside seasoned pros.

I’ve been playing this game since it launched and will be playing it for a long time to come.

7) Bayonetta 2

bayonetta-2 solo game banner
Image: Nintendo.com

One of the Nintendo Wii U’s best games and exclusives comes roaring onto the Nintendo Switch.

Bayonetta 2 continues the story of the titular female protagonist, Bayonetta, as she hunts demons and battles angels in a modern environment.

I love the Bayonetta franchise for its fast paced gameplay.

Expect tense battles, chaining stylish moves to perform combos on your enemies, and the constant need to clear each stage with a high score.

Check out this insane third-person action game today and thank me later.

6) Celeste

celeste banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Celeste is a platform game with a story about overcoming anxiousness, anxiety, and pressure.

The game not only includes an emotionally driven tale but also hundreds of environments along with a second, more challenging mode for those daring enough to try.

Don’t pass on Celeste because Celeste wants to be played.

5) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Brothers Ultimate Banner
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

What do you get when you take every character that has ever been in a Super Smash Bros. game and then add even more?

You get one of the best games on the Nintendo Switch, the best selling fighting game of all time, and a worthy game to play on game night or solo.

This is the ultimate (pun intended) party fighting game experience with over 80+ characters spanning the video game industry and history, 100 stages, a plethora of items, and fun to be had around every turn.

No Nintendo Switch library is complete without Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

4) Undertale

undertale banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Undertale is a critically acclaimed role playing game with the graphical presentation of a 1990s Super Nintendo game . . . with a lot of charm of its own.

Characters are fully developed, emotions are evoked, and the environment is so, so surreal.

For instance, you can battle monsters or show them mercy. The choice is up to you, but repercussions will be had.

Exploring the underworld has never been more entertaining than it is here.

3) Divinity: Original Sin II – Definitive Edition

divinity-original-sin-2-definitive-edition banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Journey on a grand fantasy adventure that allows you to create and be whomever you want to be in Divinity: Original Sin 2.

This version of the popular multiplayer game includes hundreds of changes, fixes, and additions as well as the ability to play on either PC or Switch with the same save file.

PC players can continue where they left off and not have to worry about starting over (and vice versa).

And given Original Sin 2 has hundreds of hours of content, cross progression save files no matter what platform you choose is very much a good thing.

2) Super Mario Odyssey

super-mario-odyssey banner
Image: Nintendo.com

Explore the world as Mario in an epic 3D adventure similar to the sandbox game worlds seen in classic games such as Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine.

This is a critically acclaimed modern masterpiece for fans of platforming action and adventuring set within the Super Mario universe.

Collect moons, gain power ups, and take control of Mario’s new friend, Cappy.

Utilize Mario’s living cap to solve puzzles, take control of enemies, and have fun.

Super Mario Odyssey is the new 3D Mario game fans have been waiting for.

1) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Zelda Botw banner
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Breath of the Wild is one of the best games of all time and you owe it to yourself to play this gem.

This fantastical open world is sprawling with enemies to combat, puzzles to solve, shrines to explore, weapons to pick up, characters to meet, and items to collect in order to cook dishes that replenish health.

See a place you want to visit? You can glide towards, walk or run to, or climb upon pretty much anything in the distance that you see.

The entire game is supplemented by a minimalist approach to music and storytelling yet steeped in lore and mystery as to what happened 100 years prior.

I beat Breath of the Wild twice and spent hundreds of hours in this game world, and I still want to explore and do more.

Explore, gather, fight, and solve puzzles for forever and a day.

This open-world reinvention of the Zelda series never gets stale.
