Today, I want to talk about how I beat a G4 Hyper Gammoth all by myself in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch.

Doing so required me to equip gear that increased my defense while also protecting myself against Gammoth’s tremors, roars, and wind pressure.

It was a hectic fight that I beat in 39 minutes with 2 faints. But I can now always say I did it solo.

If you’re looking to tackle G4 Hyper Gammoth by yourself, keep reading to hear about my experience.

So why did I tackle G4 Hyper Gammoth by myself?

Two reasons:

  1. I enjoy the challenge and satisfaction of playing Monster Hunter solo
  2. I needed to get a Hyper Hunter VI material to upgrade my armor

There are a handful of quests that would provide my sought after Hyper Hunter VI material but fighting a Gammoth seemed the easiest.

The alternative monster hunts that provide Hyper Hunter VI?

  • Hyper Deviljho
  • Hyper Glavenus
  • Hyper Diablos
  • Hyper Rajang
  • and more

Basically, the Hyper Hunter VI is locked behind some of the toughest monsters on the G4 difficulty (which is crafted for 4 players, mind you) of the harder, Hyper variation.

So, a slow moving Gammoth with low mobility didn’t seem too bad after looking over my options.

Hyper Gammoth, then, had to be my first choice.

It also didn’t hurt that hunting a Gammoth was my target of the day and provided me with extra goodies if completed successfully.

Some Notes

I used . . .

  • Authority Pathfinder sword and shield
  • Striker Hunter Style
  • 3 Hunter Arts: Round Force 2, Chaos Oil 2, and Absolute Readiness
  • 2 healing Palico

The Gear And Skills

I put together a set of armor and skills that would work well against Gammoth’s strengths.

I used the armor from defeating the final boss of the game, the Neset armor.

This armor set has unique traits and a great Defense value which is why I selected it.

In hindsight, I should have worn armor that boosted my Ice Res. I will take that into account in future hunts against this ice beast.

  • Attack: 300
  • Defense: 823
  • Fire Res: 10
  • Water Res: -5
  • Thunder Res: -10
  • Ice Res: 0
  • Dragon Res: 10

Now, onto my anti-Gammoth skill set.

  • Windproof (Hi)
  • Divine Blessing
  • Earplugs
  • Tremor Res
  • Stamina Thief

Windproof (Hi), Earplugs, and Tremor Res all protect against Gammoth’s wind pressure, roars, and ground quakes respectively.

I wanted to make sure its attacks did not leave me vulnerable.

Divine Blessing helped reduce damage occasionally while Stamina Thief was simply a random extra skill on my talisman.

The Items

I brought an assortment of items with me on this hunt.

  • Combo Book 1
  • Combo Book 2
  • Potion
  • Mega Potions
  • Demondrug
  • Armorskin
  • Max Potion
  • Lifepowders
  • Affinity Oil
  • Stamina Oil
  • Herb
  • Honey
  • Blue Mushrooms
  • Paintballs
  • Psyhoserum
  • Hot Drink
  • Whetstones
  • Rations

This setup allowed me to create additional healing items with a greater chance of success after I depleted my stock.

In addition, I also brought along the 4 attack and defense buff items in my inventory (forgetting their names at the moment, sadly).

The Hunt

ACT 1

G4 Hyper Gammoth was not as difficult as other monsters but hit really hard.

I fainted twice, both times by the same move.

Gammoth enjoyed standing on its hind legs and then plopping forward to cause large damage.

When he began this attack, I maneuvered behind him and towards his back legs. I thought he would plop forward as he usually did.

This time, however, he sat backwards right on top of me.

He squashed me with his giant rump and killed me instantly. Never underestimate the power of a large, Hyper Gammoth with G4 strength.

ACT 2

A hunter attacking a mommoth's ice covereed leg

Fighting Gammoth meant learning its moves like any monster in Monster Hunter.

Most of its attacks were easy enough to avoid. I mainly stayed close to its back legs to deal damage or attack its hyper points when I found an opportunity to do so in order to build my hunter gauge faster.

Otherwise, I remained cautious and continued to heal, drink my Hot Drinks, sharpen my weapon, and eat my rations at opportune times throughout the battle.

At one point, I began to flee from the giant brute only to realize Gammoth was backing up. It was too late.

The monster squashed me once more by sitting down with the same exact move that caused my first faint.

I was now on my last life and I still wasn’t sure how close to defeat the mighty Gammoth was.

ACT 3

A defeated Gammoth with its trunk in the air inside an ice cavern

I restocked my supplies at the Supply Box once I re-spawned.

The extra healing along with the Nulberries (to heal against Gammoth’s Iceblight) came in handy during this part of the battle.

I remained even more cautious for the remainder of the hunt due to not wanting to perish. Because three faints and its back to starting the quest all over again.

Therefore, I chose my attacks carefully and proceeded to hit Gammoth’s hind legs in order to stay away from the devastating attacks created by its front legs and trunk.

And I did all of this while keeping my distance whenever it stood on its hind legs so I wouldn’t get squashed to death for the third time.

Finally, the mighty mammoth began to limp which meant its health was low.

I healed and sharpened my blade once more before following the brute into an ice cavern (Area 5 on the Frozen Seaway map).

The rest of the battle went by without error and I was able to defeat it with a forward jump attack of my sword.

The Aftermath

An on-screen box with a few item icons in them

I did it. I finally beat the giant G4 Hyper Gammoth all by myself and was rewarded with exactly 1 Hyper Hunter VI. Yay!

Although, I need at least 4 to 8 more of these.

I think I might be able to shave off 5 minutes or so by playing better and not fainting. Which means I have another half dozen 35 to 40 minute hunts in front of me.

But, it will be all worth it in the end, having a maxed out defense for my armor.

Final Words

Overall, I enjoyed fighting the G4 Hyper Gammoth and encourage you to try it.

It wasn’t as bad as I thought but it did take nearly the entire 50 minutes allocated to complete.

I suggest picking a weapon you are comfortable with and really learning Gammoth’s attacks and movements to come out on top.

Just watch out when it sits down.
