Can You Drop Items In Resident Evil 1?
You cannot drop items in Resident Evil 1 or in the Remake.
The Explanation
The original Resident Evil does not allow item dropping.
This is because item management and limited inventory space are key components to the gameplay.
How To Get Rid Of Items From Your Inventory
Items cannot be dropped but there are a few ways to remove items from your precious inventory to free up inventory slots.
Use these techniques if you need more inventory space.
1) Use Items
Usable items such as herbs and ink ribbons will vanish immediately upon use.
2) No Longer Needed
Keys can be tossed once they’re been used to the fullest.
3) Combine Items
Combining items (such as multiple stacks of handgun ammo or herbs) will free up space.
Store Items In Storage Boxes
The best way to remove items from your inventory and free-up space is by taking frequent trips to the various safe rooms throughout the game to use the storage box.
You can store dozens of items inside the storage box.
And the contents of the storage box are the same regardless of the safe room and can be accessed from any storage box location.
You can . . .
- store items in the item box until you need them
- store items in the item box for the entirety of the game
- remove items from the item box
- swap items from your inventory and the item box
- and so forth
Item box management is the primary way to remove and add items from your inventory.
Item Procuring Tips
Lastly, let’s talk about picking up items.
You don’t have to pick up every item you come across the first time you see one.
This is a very important tactic to practice while playing the game.
Think of the game world as a temporary storage location for the items you find.
Some items can remain where they are until you need them, while others should be added to your inventory on the spot.
- Door keys, ammo, guns, and ink ribbons should be picked up
- Key items and herbs should be picked up only if you need them
The Benefits Of Leaving Items
Leaving items where you found them temporarily decreases inventory stress.
As long as you remember where certain items are, you can always go back and pick them up for later use.
And if you leave a few herbs here and there, you will always have healing locations strewn across the map whenever you’re hurt.
No need to make a dangerous trek to a safe room if you left an herb in the next room.
Practice Makes Perfect
Practicing leaving certain items on the ground will decrease the desire to “drop” or swap items.
Learning which items to pick up and not pick up takes practice over time.
NOTE: Defensive items (such as daggers and batteries) in Resident Evil Remake do not take up an inventory slot. Always pick these up.
